To give you a sense of where LA alt-rockers Failure exist in the musical universe, during their seven-year tenure in the ’90s, they recorded with Steve Albini, toured with Tool, and covered Depeche Mode. A Perfect Circle/Queens Of The Stone Age guitarist Troy Van Leeuwen was a member for a while, too, and frontman Ken Andrews went on to produce everyone from NIN to BRMC to Tenacious D. (He also worked with Beck on music for Nacho Libre and produced Chris Cornell’s Casino Royale theme.) You don’t always hear about them when people are recalling the glory days of ’90s guitar rock, but their fan base is fervent; when Failure’s “classic lineup” of Andrews, Greg Edwards, and Kelli Scott went on a reunion tour last year, attendance was a rite of passage for at least one friend of mine who also worships Trent Reznor and Maynard James Keenan. Speaking of Keenan, he loves this band so much that he asked them to play his 50th birthday party. For those deep into alternative rock’s darker side, new Failure music is a big deal.
The first of that music has arrived. Last night, the band posted “Come Crashing” on Bandcamp. It’s Failure’s first new release since 1996 album Fantastic Planet, and it’s part of a tour-only EP called Tree Of Stars that also features live versions of “Let It Drip,” “Frogs,” “Sergeant Politeness” and “Heliotropic.” A new full-length is also in the works, but in the meantime, we’ve got “Come Crashing” to bask in.
