MAKS

Dutch drummer Maks A and his band MAKS have released their new album 3ft No Diving, a fine collection of rock & blues tunes.  Since the 70s Maks has been a sometimes musician, but now, after becoming a multi-instrumentalist, he has turned a solo project into a full band endeavor.  Drawing on his experiences in a new wave band and his love of 70s rock, 3ft No Diving feels like a labor of love on his part.  “Lay Down Low” pulsates with a driving beat and layers of organ & guitar counterplay.  The corporate world is mocked in the rocking “Career”, though in a very humorous way.  His gravely voice wails the blues in “Stones in My Passway”, while the fuzzy guitar solo howls its fury.

Sometimes playful keyboard or horn bits flow into the songs, notably the Emerson-like synth solo on “Last Thing On Your Mind”.  The Latin-flavored “Critical Mess” succeeds as a pain-filled love song.  A cover of the Velvet Underground’s “Waiting for the Man” benefits from a faster pace and clever rearrangement.  This is straightforward  rock ‘n’ roll, very similar to Alice Cooper or Iggy Pop.  With its mixture of punk, rock, new wave, country and blues, the album is diverse enough for most tastes.  Hard-driving and upbeat, while never less than fun.
